A brief history

The York Gate Hall Museum of Armour

The building was originally 'The York Gate Hall', a museum of armour, built in 1911.

Later, for many years, it was operated as a puppet theatre.

The Windsor Cinema

In 1965 the building was converted into a 16mm cartoon cinema. Later, 35mm equipment was installed, the modern day standard size film that is still used today. There is a street level foyer which houses the box office, offering a full range of refreshments. The foyer also gives access to the 23 seat balcony. Seating in the stalls below is reached by a staircase. The 88 seats are actually well below street level, hence the deceptive size of the cinema from the outside.

The Palace Cinema

The cinema was refurbished in February 1988 and again in January 1997.

The present owners, from August 2006, have undertaken an extensive program of refurbishments, whilst maintaining the character of the Grade 11 listed building. The present owners of the cinema are only the third owners in forty years.

The Cinema is privately owned and is not maintained by any grants. It is very popular with both local people and visitors alike. We hope you will continue to support us by visiting this unique seaside cinema.

The Thanet Film Society

In addition to our program showing the latest films, The Thanet Film Society holds regular Tuesday meetings at the cinema, presenting a very varied program of independent and art house films.

The Cinema Organ

Organist and co-owner of the cinema, Colin Jay, has installed his classic cinema organ and regularly performs the cinema music of days gone by at events, before a film showing.
